For Jack

I lived across the river and saw it all from a distance. I didn’t hit me then. I saw all the coverage that night and saw the smoke – still from a distance. I didn’t hit me then. Three days and all the same – everything around is hitting me with it, but still it didn’t hit me. Friday, early evening, driving past a Park and Ride lot near my home, I saw it – and it all hit me. My neighbor’s car still in the lot – not alone – but few cars remained. And would remain until claimed, by not my neighbor anymore.
